Special Extensions of Term for Japanese Applicants

June 01, 2011

We are pleased to inform you that in a letter dated 1 June 2011, the Registrar of Patents, Designs and Trademarks has notified that the Israeli Patent Office (IPO) will grant special extensions of term until 31 December 2011 for the benefit of Japanese applicants that have been affected by the recent devastating earthquake and tsunami.
The Registrar also sent a formal letter to this effect to the Japanese Patent Office, which can be accessed by following this link.
Such special extensions will not be considered within the maximum extension limit imposed by the IPO of 6 months for responding to an office action and of a total of 15 months during the entire prosecution.
In case you believe that a certain patent, trademark or design application merits such special treatment, please let us know.
We would like to conclude by extending our best wishes that life throughout Japan will return to normal soon and that all wounds and damages will be healed and repaired in good time.
